CNN reports that a Tesla Tesla in full self-driving mode caused quite a stir in California.
CNN reports that Tesla’s “phantom brake” issue caused an eight-car pileup. The phenomenon is being investigated by the NHTSA. Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving”, the latest version of its software, can be used on surface roads.
According to CNN, Tesla’s “phantom brake” issue, which is already under federal investigation, led to an eight-car pileup in San Francisco Bay Area last month.
CNN obtained a report detailing the crash through a records request. It said that nine people were treated for injuries after the crash. One juvenile was also hospitalized.
CNN reports that the Tesla driver who caused the accident said to authorities that he was in full-auto-driving mode at the time.
According to CNN, the California Highway Patrol reported that it was unable to confirm whether the “full self-driving software” was in use at the time of crash.
The accident occurred just hours after Tesla CEO Elon Musk had announced via Twitter that all Tesla drivers in North America would have access to the “Full Self Driving Beta”.
After receiving 758 reports from Tesla owners claiming their cars had stopped due to unknown reasons, the US government launched an investigation into Tesla’s self driving software. This dangerous phenomenon is known as “phantom brake”.
Tesla owners have previously complained to NHTSA about incidents where their vehicles suddenly and violently slowed down at highway speeds. These incidents usually occur after the Tesla driver switches on its Autopilot system. This automatically accelerates, brakes and steers on highways.
Tesla’s “Full Self Driving Beta”, which was released on Thanksgiving, goes one step further in this automated driving system. Tesla owners can now use Autopilot to drive on highways, but the Tesla will still be able to control their vehicle via the “self-driving software” on the surface roads. The Tesla should also be able to make complete trips on its own.
There are still bugs in the new software. A YouTuber shared a 23-minute video of how the Full Self-Driving beta made them drive to work earlier this week. This video highlights the stress that the software can cause.
The YouTuber stated that he is comfortable using FSD while driving, but not much else.
