According to a study, misinformation about climate crisis is flourishing via Elon Musk's Twitter.
Climate Action Against Disinformation (CAAD) published a study on Thursday that showed Twitter was recommending "#ClimateScam", when people search for "climate". The hashtag was being recommended by Twitter to several Insider employees at the top of the search results for "climate" at the time of publication.
The study, which used the hashtag, stated that denialist content was making a strong comeback on Twitter, in particular, in 2022.
According to the study, the hashtag spiked suddenly on Twitter in July and has been steadily increasing since then. It was added that more than 91,000 users had used the hashtag more than 362,000 times by December.
According to the report, the term appears to be trending despite data showing more activity and engagement on hashtags like #ClimateCrisis or #ClimateEmergency. Researchers added that it could not be explained by popularity, personalization, or volume of content.
According to the study, the source of #ClimateScam was not clear. This highlighted the need for transparency about how content was presented to users.
The report stated that only a small portion of the content found under the hashtag was misinformation.
Since he purchased Twitter in October 2013, Elon Musk has reduced Twitter's content moderators team. He also criticized some past Twitter content moderation decisions including the suspension, January 6, Capitol riots, of Donald Trump.
Insider reached out to Twitter representatives but they did not respond immediately.
