Russia Equips Tanks with Jamming Tech to Counter Exploding Drones in Ukraine Conflict

Russia Equips Tanks with Jamming Tech to Counter Exploding Drones in Ukraine Conflict

February 29, 2024 By Peter Leave a Comment

Introduction

Russia has taken measures to counter the increasing threat of exploding drones by attaching jammers to its tanks and vehicles. This move is part of the ongoing electronic warfare between Russia and Ukraine, as both sides seek to protect their troops from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that pose a major risk to tanks, armored vehicles, supply trucks, infantry squads, and individual soldiers.

Russia's Use of Jammers

Photos have emerged showing the jammers that Russia is installing on its tanks and vehicles to disrupt Ukraine's drones. One video even advertises these jammers, while Russian Telegram channels are crowdfunding to purchase more of these devices for Russian troops.

The Volnorez C-UAS EW Jammer

A Russian Telegram channel recently shared a photo of a camouflaged tank equipped with a jammer on its roof screen. This jammer, identified as the Volnorez C-UAS EW jammer, features a cone-shaped system and is designed to protect against first-person view (FPV) drone attacks. The same channel has previously shared multiple photos of this jammer being attached to other vehicles, including tanks and pickup trucks.

Crowdfunding for Jammers

Furthermore, a video was posted showcasing the jammer system, its production process, and how it successfully jammed Ukrainian drones. Observers note that Russian Telegram channels are actively crowdfunding to acquire more jammers for Russian units. The effectiveness and current deployment status of these jammers remain unclear.

Countermeasures and the Ongoing Drone War

While Russia and Ukraine continue to develop electronic warfare defenses, both sides are also racing to create drones that are resistant to jamming. This indicates the intensity of the ongoing drone war between the two countries. Ukraine, in particular, has demonstrated its prowess in flying FPV drones into small open hatches on tanks and Russian trenches. The country has also developed a domestically made drone with thermal imaging specifically for fast and quiet nighttime raids. This particular drone has earned the nickname "Baba Yaga" from Russia due to its threatening capabilities.

Conclusion

The use of jammers by Russia on its tanks and vehicles reflects the growing concern over the threat of FPV drone attacks. As the drone war between Russia and Ukraine escalates, both sides are constantly seeking ways to outmaneuver each other through electronic warfare and the development of advanced drones. The battleground has expanded beyond the traditional realm, bringing technology and innovation to the forefront of modern warfare.
