Sam Altman: AI is a Tool, Not a ‘Creature’

Sam Altman: AI is a Tool, Not a ‘Creature’

March 2, 2024 By Peter Leave a Comment

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, wants to dispel the misconception that artificial intelligence (AI) is a 'creature.' In an interview with The Advocate, Altman emphasized that AI should be viewed as a tool rather than a sci-fi entity.

AI as a Tool, Not a Creature

Altman highlighted that while AI is often sensationalized as a 'creature' in movies, in reality, it serves as a powerful tool. He specifically mentioned ChatGPT as an example of AI being a practical tool for various applications.

Risks Associated with AI

Despite AI being a tool, Altman acknowledged that there are risks involved. He pointed out that these risks have a distinct nature and need to be carefully managed.

Optimism and Challenges

Altman expressed optimism about the positive impact of AI when used as a tool. He believes that providing humans with better tools can lead to remarkable advancements and create new value for society.

However, Altman's mission-oriented approach to using AI for the greater good has faced challenges. Elon Musk, the cofounder of OpenAI, filed a lawsuit against Altman, alleging that the partnership with Microsoft deviates from the nonprofit mission originally set by the organization.

Concerns and Response

The lawsuit claims that OpenAI's collaboration with Microsoft has shifted the focus towards developing AGI for maximizing profits rather than benefiting humanity. In response, Altman and OpenAI's CSO, Jason Kwon, stated that they believe Musk's claims stem from regret over not being actively involved in the company.

Despite the legal dispute, OpenAI continues its work, including collaborations with companies like Axel Springer to enhance AI models using media reporting data.

Altman's vision of AI as a tool for positive impact remains strong, emphasizing the importance of leveraging technology to drive innovation and value creation for society.
