Sam Altman Denies Elon Musk’s Claim About OpenAI Investors

Sam Altman Denies Elon Musk’s Claim About OpenAI Investors

February 8, 2025 By Peter Leave a Comment

Sam Altman has refuted Elon Musk's accusation that OpenAI restricts investors from funding competitors. Altman stated in a sworn statement to a California judge that Musk's claim is inaccurate. He clarified that investors were only informed that they would lose access to OpenAI data if they chose to invest in a rival company.

Disputing Musk's Allegations

In response to Elon Musk's federal racketeering lawsuit, Altman personally denied the allegation that OpenAI investors must adhere to a no-competition rule. Altman emphasized that this claim is false and submitted a sworn declaration to the judge overseeing Musk's lawsuit.

Accusations of Collusion

Elon Musk accused Altman of colluding with Microsoft to eliminate competition, including imposing restrictions on OpenAI investors from supporting rival AI firms during a recent funding round. Altman's declaration aimed to counter Musk's request for an injunction against OpenAI, which, if granted, would prevent the organization from enforcing investment limitations and transitioning to a for-profit model.

Contradicting Musk's Claims

Altman clarified that during the funding round, he did not impose the alleged investment condition on any investor. He highlighted that while there were some restrictions concerning confidential information, they were not as stringent as Musk portrayed. Altman affirmed that preventing investors from funding competitors is a standard practice to safeguard sensitive data.

Legal Battle Continues

During a court hearing, Musk's attorney raised concerns about antitrust violations related to the investment ban enforced by OpenAI. Altman's legal team countered by stating that investors were not required to boycott competitors and that some investors supported both xAI and OpenAI. The legal proceedings are ongoing, with a hearing on the dismissal of the lawsuit scheduled for May 28.
