South Korea’s Military Resumes Live-Fire Drills After 7-Year Pause

South Korea’s Military Resumes Live-Fire Drills After 7-Year Pause

July 1, 2024 By Peter Leave a Comment

South Korea's military has taken a significant step by firing on border islands for the first time in seven years. This action comes as a North Korean missile test fails, and tensions escalate with balloon warfare.

Resumption of Live-Fire Drills

After a hiatus of seven years, South Korea has resumed live-fire drills. The drills were previously halted due to a 2018 military accord, which North Korea allegedly violated on 3,600 occasions. The recent drills mark a notable escalation in military activities in the region.

Failed North Korean Missile Test

North Korea's suspected hypersonic missile test ended in failure as the missile exploded midair. The launch coincided with North Korea's discontent over trilateral drills involving the US, South Korea, and Japan. The presence of a US Navy aircraft carrier further fueled tensions.

South Korean Military Response

Following the failed missile test, South Korea promptly resumed firing drills on border islands, including Yeonpyeong and Baengnyeong. The South Korean Marine Corps emphasized the defensive nature of the drills, aimed at enhancing firepower operations capabilities and military readiness posture through regular exercises.

Escalating Balloon Warfare

Amidst military activities, tensions have also heightened through balloon warfare between the two Koreas. Trash-filled balloons from North Korea have been floating towards South Korea, prompting activists in Seoul to retaliate by sending leaflets and speakers across the border. Notably, the speakers have broadcasted an "anti-Kim Jong Un anthem."

Diplomatic Developments

On the diplomatic front, recent agreements between North Korea and Russia have reshaped strategic interests in the region. South Korea is reassessing its stance, particularly regarding support for Ukraine amidst North Korea's contributions to Russia's military endeavors. South Korea remains wary of increased cooperation between Russia and North Korea, emphasizing adherence to international sanctions.

These recent events underscore the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in the Korean peninsula, with military drills, failed missile tests, and unconventional warfare tactics contributing to heightened tensions in the region.
