- Ted Cruz preached toleration for the LGBT community in a Twitter spat he had with a local pastor.
- Cruz tweeted: "Let the person who is sinless among you be the first to throw a stone at this woman."
- Cruz has recently condemned Uganda's new harsh anti-gay law.
Sen. Ted Cruz cited the Bible on Monday and quoted verses in the book to defend the LGBTQ community. This was a radical departure from his conservative position on gay issues.
Cruz replied to a Florida pastor Tom Ascol who tweeted a Bible verse suggesting that gay men should all be killed. Ascol's tweet was accompanied by the words: "Your Biblical analysis is incorrect."
The Texas Senator then used another Bible verse to back up his argument that homosexuals should not be persecuted.
Jesus told us that we should "render unto Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and unto God that which is God's." Cruz tweeted: "We are talking about the laws of men, not the Old Testament Laws of God."
Then he added, "Do you believe that the US government should execute all gay people?

Cruz also cited another Bible verse – "let him that is without sin, among you first cast a rock at her" – arguing that it's cruel and hypocritical for others to judge them because they sinned.
Ascol told Newsweek later that his question wasn't meant to suggest gay people be executed but rather to determine if the Senator believes that God was guilty when He criminalized homosexual behavior in the Old Testament.
He told Newsweek he is "grateful" to have had the conversation with Cruz and looks forward to "further discussion with him on these important issues."
Cruz's pro-LGBT, religion-based tweets came just days after he called Uganda's anti-gay law — which allows gay people to be sentenced in Uganda to death because of their sexuality — horrifying and "wrong".
Cruz's strong support for the LGBT community has changed his position from when he claimed that the US Supreme Court had been "clearly incorrect" in its Obergefell V. Hodges decision of 2015, which legalized same sex marriages.
"Obergefell and Roe v. Wade ignored two centuries of the history of our country." In a July podcast, he stated that marriage was an issue left to the state.
In November of last year, he also voted against the Respect for Marriage Act. This act was intended to protect same-sex marriages and interracial unions. The Texas Tribune reported that he said it would be "an attack on religious freedoms".
Insider sent a comment request to Cruz outside of normal business hours, but the company did not respond immediately.
