Tesla owners, Elon Musk is listening to you.
Musk announced Wednesday a solution for one of the biggest complaints from his customers — but it won't last.
He said that Tesla owners would be able, for a limited period of time, to transfer the expensive Full Self-Driving Package to a brand new Tesla. The move was announced in response to a question from an investor during Tesla's earnings call for the second quarter.
Musk replied, "Yes, we are asked this question a lot." "We're happy to announce that we will allow FSD transfers in Q3. It is only a once-off amnesty. You must take advantage in Q3.
He added, "I hope that this makes people happy."
Tesla charges $15,000 per suite of features that it calls Full Self-Driving. The system relies on a series of cameras that monitor the road. It has been in prototype mode for many years, but it still cannot reliably drive a vehicle on its own. Tesla owners have complained for years that the expensive, experimental feature is not able to be kept when they upgrade their car.
Musk has been claiming for years that FSD will be able drive fully autonomously in the near future, which adds to frustration among owners. FSD Beta is still inconsistently driven, as shown by clips shared online. It can navigate complex routes without the need for human assistance and it can also make basic driving mistakes.
Tesla has increased the price of FSD thousands of dollars.
This could boost sales at a time when Tesla is most in need. Musk warned on Wednesday that Tesla production would slow in the third-quarter due to planned upgrades at its factory. Tesla is also facing increasing competition from established automakers who are diving headfirst into electric vehicles.
