The Boring Company Expands Tunnel System in Las Vegas Despite Safety Concerns

The Boring Company Expands Tunnel System in Las Vegas Despite Safety Concerns

April 12, 2024 By Peter Leave a Comment

Elon Musk's company, The Boring Company, is currently in the process of enlarging its tunnel network beneath Las Vegas. Initially introduced in 2021, this tunnel system is undergoing expansion despite recent safety issues.

Violation and Shutdown of Vegas Monorail

Reports indicate that The Boring Company inadvertently exposed the foundational pillars supporting the Vegas monorail, resulting in the temporary shutdown of the public transit system. Clark County issued multiple violations to the company for this incident, deeming it a potential hazard.

Expansion Plans for Vegas Loop

Following the successful launch of a 1.7-mile tunnel project transporting passengers beneath the Las Vegas Convention Center in Teslas, The Boring Company aims to create the Vegas Loop. This expanded system is designed to connect various key locations, including the airport, downtown Vegas, and more, with a total of 68 miles of tunnels receiving approval from the county and city.

Safety Concerns and Violations

Despite these ambitious plans, The Boring Company has faced challenges during its expansion efforts. Recent incidents involving the exposure of monorail support pillars led to the issuance of violations by Clark County. In response to these safety concerns, corrective actions were taken, including the temporary suspension of the monorail system on June 15.

An independent engineering firm was engaged to assess the risk, and necessary repairs were carried out promptly to ensure the safety of the public. While the incidents in June and October last year raised significant concerns, steps were taken to address the issues and prevent any further disruptions.

Past Safety Issues and Employee Concerns

These incidents are not isolated cases, as previous reports have highlighted safety concerns surrounding The Boring Company. Former employees have expressed feelings of insecurity while working there, citing instances of chemical burns and hazardous accidents.

Allegations of employees enduring chemical-laced mud and sustaining injuries further underscore the importance of maintaining strict safety protocols within the company. Both internal and external investigations have shed light on these issues, emphasizing the need for enhanced safety measures moving forward.
