Grimes' Grok vs. Elon Musk's Chatbot
It seems that Grimes may have beaten Elon Musk to the punch with the name Grok for their respective AI creations. Grimes' new AI toy, Grok, shares a name with the chatbot released by Elon Musk's AI startup, xAI. However, the trademark application for Grimes' Grok was filed over a month before Elon Musk's chatbot.
The Timeline of Grok's Launch
Elon Musk announced the name of his chatbot on November 4, through a post on X (formerly known as Twitter). On the other hand, Grimes and toy startup Curio announced the launch of their AI-powered toy, Grok, on Thursday. However, the trademark application for the toy Grok was filed by Curio on September 12, which is well before xAI filed its trademark application for its chatbot on October 23.
Grok and Grocket
Curio, the company behind Grimes' Grok, stated that the name of their toy is unrelated to Musk's chatbot. They clarified that Grok is short for Grocket. The reason behind the name Grocket is that Grimes' children spend a considerable amount of time around rockets due to their father's company, SpaceX.
The Meaning of Grok
Musk did not provide an explanation for the meaning of his chatbot's name. However, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, to grok means "to understand profoundly and intuitively." It might also be a nod to Robert Heinlein's 1961 sci-fi novel, "Stranger in a Strange Land."
Grimes' AI Toy for Her Children
Grimes revealed that the AI-powered toy, Grok, which speaks with her voice, was specifically designed for her children with Musk. The singer shared this information with the Washington Post.
The Custody Battle
Musk and Grimes are currently engaged in a custody battle over their three children. They are currently in disagreement over which state should have jurisdiction over their case.
Neither Musk nor Grimes immediately responded to a request for comment from Business Insider, which was sent outside regular business hours.
