Key takeaways and actionable insights

Picture this: small businesses are navigating a maze of online marketing avenues. From social platforms to directory listings, SEO efforts, and more, leads can come knocking from various doors. With AI tools becoming the go-to for brand exploration, some SMBs are venturing into GEO (generative engine optimization) to secure a spot in AI-driven search results.

Our small business cohorts spilled the beans on how they're juggling their online presence and what lies on the horizon. Let's unpack the key insights before we dive deep into the data.

Driving and converting traffic: The ultimate challenge

Whether we're talking SEO or other traffic sources, small businesses are in agreement: attracting and converting visitors into customers is the Everest they must conquer. This challenge trumps content creation woes and algorithm acrobatics.

It's a no-brainer; businesses set up shop online to reel in new customers. In our survey, a whopping 69% highlighted their website as a primary lead generator, with 70% directly selling through their sites.

Converting traffic is the Mount Everest of SEO challenges for SMBs. A conversion-optimized website with prominent CTAs, lead-generating pop-ups, and easily accessible contact information is the goldmine.

Social media takes the lead in driving traffic

Move over SEO; social media is stealing the spotlight as the driving force behind customer acquisition for small businesses. In the battle of traffic sources, social media (64%) outshines even SEO (52%) in the SMB realm.

Surprisingly, 35% of businesses sans websites attribute their decision to the abundance of traffic and leads from social platforms and marketplaces, rendering a website unnecessary.

These findings align with our Small Business Marketing Trends Report, where social media marketing and advertising trumped SEO as the top choices for SMBs.

Social media marketing and ads take the crown over SEO as the SMB favorites.

Consumer behavior mirrors this trend. Nearly 73% of internet users turn to social media for brand and product sleuthing. Additionally, 54% of Gen X shoppers rely on social platforms for their product discovery.

However, tracking traffic and leads from social media can be a Herculean task. SMBs seem to be cracking this nut, overcoming the tracking challenges to drive meaningful results.

These results left us pleasantly surprised since tracking social media traffic and leads is notoriously tricky, especially for smaller businesses lacking robust tracking systems. Yet, SMBs are finding ways to navigate this maze and correlate social traffic with tangible outcomes. Alternatively, they might be facing an even bigger challenge in tracking SEO efforts and results, which can be a puzzle on its own.

SEO remains a powerhouse despite traffic diversions

While social media shines, SEO still holds its ground for small businesses. A staggering 72% vouched for the effectiveness of their SEO strategies. The confidence soars to 89% among the larger SMBs with 11 to 100 employees. That's a solid win! Search engines remain the go-to for scouting local businesses, with the top search results hogging all the limelight.
