The Trump administration reports that more than 20,000 federal employees have agreed to buyout offers. Despite this number, it falls short of the White House's target of 5-10% of federal workers accepting the deal. Officials anticipate a significant increase in acceptances leading up to the February 6 deadline.
Anticipated Spike in Numbers
Two officials from the Trump administration revealed that over 20,000 federal workers have agreed to the buyout offers. Although Axios initially reported around 20,000 acceptances, the White House spokesperson disputed this figure, claiming it was higher. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is set to provide an official update soon.
Expected Growth in Resignations
While the current figure of 20,000 buyouts is not up to date, OPM mentioned a rapid increase in deferred resignations. The largest surge is predicted to occur 24-48 hours before the deadline.
Government Incentives and Concerns
Last week, the Trump administration extended an offer to all federal employees, guaranteeing full pay and benefits until September 30 for those who opt to resign by February 6. With over 2 million federal employees, the White House estimates between 100,000 and 200,000 individuals to accept the buyout.
Despite the offer, Democrats and labor unions caution against accepting it, citing concerns about Trump's authority to make such offers and the uncertainty of receiving promised benefits. Democratic Senator Tim Kaine advised federal workers not to trust Trump's promises, emphasizing their stability in their roles regardless of political changes.
Promotion of Buyout Offers
Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency have endorsed the buyout deals. Musk has proposed using severance packages and early retirement options to reduce the federal workforce even before Trump's presidency. The government is actively promoting the offer, with OPM updating FAQs and suggesting civil servants explore private sector opportunities or take time off to travel during the 8-month period.
