- Tucker Carlson’s Twitter show made its debut. Users and advertisers should be worried.
- His monologue suggested that Twitter is quickly becoming a place where extreme views are welcomed.
- Elon Musk may have a problem if users and advertisers find that the content is inappropriate.
Tucker Carlson’s Twitter show has finally aired its first episode. It's everything you expected: a long, meandering monologue about 9/11, UFOs and Ukraine war conspiracy theories.
The former Fox News presenter launched his first episode of "Tucker On Twitter" on Tuesday. At the time of this writing, the video had received around 50 million views.
Carlson speculated that Ukraine could have blown up the Kakhovka Dam which caused flooding this week. He also claimed that the media was not interested in Jeffrey Epstein or 9/11. Carlson talked extensively about the whistleblower who said that the US may be hiding an intact alien car.
"Your average Yakherder in Tajikistan will know who detonated the Nordstream Pipeline. It's obvious. Does he really think that a skinny guy in a dress could be a girl? Carlson replied.
"Come on. He would have never thought of that. For you to come to such conclusions, you'd have to be lied at high volume for years. We have, of course.
This comes less than one month after the controversial anchor made his decision to switch to Twitter, after claiming that it was the only big platform still allowing free speech under Elon Musk's ownership. Carlson stated at the time that "the news you consume on a basic level is a lie."
Carlson's debut won't do much to change the perception that Twitter, under Elon Musk, has become a merry go-round of conspiracy theories and extreme speech.
Ritchie Torres, a Democrat Rep., tweeted that Carlson was "even more blatantly a conspiracist and pro Putin propagandist on Twitter" than in his "Fox News incarnation."
Pekka Kallioniemi a researcher, expert in social media and interactive technology, tweeted that Carlson was "a greedy chance who has no interest the truth," and he pushed conspiracy theories and pro Kremlin BS.
The Atlantic's Anne Applebaum tweeted that Carlson's "lies" cost Fox $800,000,000, referring to the value Fox lost when it parted ways with Carlson, while noting "he's still lying and Twitter will pay the price as well."
Not just the users are unhappy. It's not just users who are unhappy.
According to an internal presentation viewed by The New York Times, Twitter's advertising revenue for the five-week span from April 1 through May was $88.8 million. This is a 59% drop from the previous year.
Former and current Twitter employees told The Washington Post that they didn't expect the fortunes to change anytime soon, citing concerns that an increase in hate speech might deter advertisers.
Musk told the BBC last month that advertisers are returning. Insider reported that Twitter was selling its inventory by allowing adtech firms to do so.
Musk seems to be aware that allowing Carlson to go wild in future episodes, as he did Tuesday, could turn Twitter into a platform polarized by hate speech.
He said that Twitter Community Notes, and the user comments on Twitter would be "great for adding context or correcting errors."
Musk tweeted Carlson’s first episode, not as a note of congratulations, but rather to invite others to start their own shows. It would be wonderful to have shows on this platform from all sides of the political spectrum. He said.
Twitter's new chief executive Linda Yaccarino could be tasked to make the service attractive to advertisers through her extensive network of contacts in the industry.
This is an urgent matter. Musk's $44-billion takeover of Twitter was debt-fueled, and he is still paying off interest on $13-billion in loans. Twitter will be more dependent on advertisers and users than ever.
