- Twitter Blue was relaunched three months ago, and subscribers can now enjoy premium features starting at $11/mo.
- Subscribers may soon have the option to hide their verification mark.
- TechCrunch reported that the relaunch was "underwhelming" with $11 Million in mobile subscriptions.
Twitter Blue subscriptions, which were launched three months ago, have not been as profitable from ad-based revenues as Elon Musk had hoped.
TechCrunch reports that the "underwhelming" relaunch, which features perks such as an edit button or new "verified badge", long considered a status symbol for public officials, has brought in just $11 million in mobile subscriptions to the social media platform since Musk introduced it in December.
An $8 per month Twitter Blue subscription can be purchased online, and an app for Android and iOS devices will cost $11 per per month. According to The Information, around 290,000 people worldwide paid for Blue subscriptions across platforms in January. This would generate an estimated $28 million in annual revenue.
According to Social Media Today, a news source in the industry, Twitter's total operating expenses in Q2 2022 was $730 million.
Since last year's billionaire takeover, social platforms have sought to diversify their revenue streams. According to The Information, revenue for the platform has dropped 40% and 500 top advertisers have left.
According to The Verge, Blue subscribers might be able toggle visibility of their blue checkmarks to increase user engagement. Although the feature is not yet available, users can opt out of visible checkmarks to avoid rumours about their "elite" status or memes about how the "this mf" paid for Twitter in the event that a post goes viral.
In the Trump era, the term "verified" was used to refer to The Outline's reported status. It became synonymous with liberal elitist.
Insider reached Musk but he did not respond immediately to our request for comment. Insider requested comment from Twitter via a press email. The response included a poop emoticon.
