Twitter announced Thursday that it would be ending its legacy blue-tick verification program — which Elon Musk, the new owner of Twitter called "deeply corrupted," — starting April 1.

Twitter announced Thursday that it would begin to wind down its legacy verified program and remove legacy verified checkmarks.

Users can also sign up for the paid Twitter Blue subscription program to keep their blue checkmarks.

Twitter issued blue checks to verify active accounts of "public concern" before Musk's $44billion acquisition in October 2022. These accounts were independently verified by the platform.

Musk, however, announced a redesign of the verification program just days after he purchased the platform. He also announced a paid-for Twitter Blue program with blue checkmarks.

Musk has made it clear that he disagrees with the legacy blue program. Musk criticized the legacy blue program in November as a "lords and peasants" system. He claimed that the blue ticks were distributed in a corrupt and nonsensical manner in December. He tweeted last month that the legacy Twitter verification program was "deeply corrupted".

Twitter Blue subscribers who have a verified number can now get blue check marks. The program is $8 per month, or $84 annually.
