- Twitter's earlier announced removal of "legacy", verified checks almost went without incident on the first day.
- Twitter CEO Elon Musk was however presented with a meme about how the New York Times did not intend to pay for its checks.
- Musk replied, "Oh ok. We'll take it off there," and the Times' gold check vanished overnight.
Twitter had previously stated that it would begin removing "legacy” verified check marks beginning Saturday. However, it appears only one account has been affected: The official New York Times account.
The Times' gold verification check appears to have been lost sometime between Saturday night (or early Sunday morning), possibly in response to an Elon Musk meme.
According to Matt Binder, Musk said in a now-deleted Twitter that there would be a grace period of several weeks before non-paying check were removed.

@DogeDesigner frequently tweets about Musk and responded with a meme that was based on the news the New York Times said it didn't intend pay the $1,000 per monthly to keep its gold cheque nor to pay its staff members to retain their blue checks. Other media outlets, such as Insider, also stated that they don't intend to pay for verification.
Musk replied Saturday night with another response. The Times' gold check vanished overnight.
The Times' main account was the only one that had its check revoked as of Sunday afternoon. Other accounts, such as the Arts and Opinion sections, have their blue or golden checks.
Musk tweeted Saturday night, "The real tragedy with @NYTimes' propaganda is that it isn’t even interesting."
Insider reached out to Twitter for comment. The company replied with an automated message, but didn't address the question.
It appears that the Times account is the only one that is being affected by the Twitter changes. This could be because revoking checks is not an easy task.
Two former employees were quoted by the Washington Post Saturday as saying that the verification process is labor-intensive and there is no way to eliminate checks in masse without disrupting other areas of the platform.
Other than major news outlets, many other large-name users in sports and entertainment, such as LeBron James of "Seinfeld", have also tweeted their intention to not pay the check and leave the platform if they lose it. Alexander and James still had blue check marks on Sunday afternoon.
