Twitter's billionaire Elon Musk has finally delivered on his promise to replace the app's "X" logo with an "X." However, users have mocked this new logo and suggested that it would be more appropriate on a porn website than on a social media site.
Musk started his rebranding Monday, when the iconic blue bird of the platform was replaced with a large "X". He said tweets would now be called "x's."
Jesse McLaren, a comedian and writer of comedy, criticized the new logo by posting an image with various websites that had the "X" symbol on them. He wrote: "These all are porn except for one." This one is Twitter." The post has been viewed 3.9 million times with many comments echoing McLaren.
In many adult websites, the letter X is used in the name and logo. This refers to the historical X rating for adult films.
Musk posted a picture of Twitter's San Francisco HQ projecting the letter "X", and a user replied: "Oh dear. I was unaware of your rebranding idea. I was searching for Twitter Verified and scrolled past your X symbol, thinking it was a sex site. The bird is loved and recognized around the world. "You just can't purchase that level of approval."
Parker Lyon, a former Twitter employee joked that the logo on his LinkedIn profile would be embarrassing: "Get this shite off my linkedin."
Some users have drawn comparisons to the logo of XVideos adult streaming website, which has trended on Twitter since Sunday. In a blog post, the site thanked Musk.
Musk is a fan of the letter "X". He has shared in the past his vision for an "everything" app where users could tweet, shop and use banking features, among other things.
Musk was a founding member of a site that provides banking services, now known as PayPal. He originally called the site "X." Other PayPal executives overruled him on the name due to its "pornographic association."
Twitter's rebranding isn't going as planned. The police stopped workers as they were removing the Twitter sign from the San Francisco headquarters.
Musk is also facing problems from Meta, a competitor that recently launched a text-based rival app called Threads. It appears they have already trademarked "X".
