Elon Musk has cut half of the company’s workforce since taking over late October.
Two ex-Twitter employees filed a class action lawsuit against the company accusing it discrimination. The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco Federal Court, alleges that Musk’s policies had a “disproportionate effect” on women. According to the lawsuit’s data analysis, Twitter laid off 57% of its female employees and 47% of its male workers. According to the lawsuit’s data analysis, 63% of women working in engineering positions were fired, while only 48% of men worked in similar roles.
This lawsuit is just one of many filed by former employees against Twitter since Elon Musk assumed ownership in October 2007. It involved more than half of the company’s employees.
Another class-action suit addresses Twitter’s violation of the California WARN Act. This law requires that employers give significant advance notice to employees prior to conducting mass layoffs. Ex-employees claim that Twitter gave them less than the 60-day notice required and they were awarded months of severance compensation.
Another suit claims that Twitter discriminated against disabled workers, requiring them into the office without reasonable accommodation. This is a mandate under the California Fair Employment and Housing Act.
Shannon Liss–Riordan was a labor lawyer representing some Twitter employees. This press conference took place in San Francisco ahead of the court hearing on a class action suit brought by five former employees alleging that Twitter failed to provide sufficient notice before it made its mass layoffs.
The hearing was focused on an emergency motion that required Twitter to inform all employees about their rights before it distributed severance contracts. Liss-Riordan also noted that she had filed a similar lawsuit against Tesla for its June 2022 layoffs.
The conference was attended by four plaintiffs in the Liss-Riordan lawsuits. Many of them offered their support to former colleagues who have families or couldn’t make it to the conference.
Dmitry Borodaenko is the leading plaintiff in the case against Twitter for discriminating employees with disabilities. According to him, being a cancer survivor meant that he was at risk of contracting COVID-19. Musk’s new policies made it almost impossible for him to work remotely to avoid any health-related risks.
Emmanuel “Manu”, a former engineer, said to Insider that he only wanted “to send support signals to people who might be in similar circumstances.”
Most speakers expressed disapproval for Musk. Many noted that Musk seemed to believe there are no legal consequences for his treatment of workers.
“You get multi-billionaires who believe they are above the law. Liss-Riordan stated that Elon Musk was the richest man on the planet. “It is crucial that our laws are enforced so that multimillionaires, and other companies, recognize their obligation to workers.”
Insider requested comment from Twitter but Twitter did not immediately respond.
