Ukraine Presents Wish List of US Weapons, Including F-18 Hornets and Apache Helicopters

December 9, 2023 By Peter Leave a Comment

Introduction

Ukraine has recently presented a wish list of weapons to US officials, expressing their desire to receive key Western weapons to continue their fight against Russia. Despite a Ukraine aid crisis in the Senate, Ukraine remains hopeful that they will receive the necessary military assistance to defend themselves. In a closed-door meeting in Washington, Ukrainian defense officials discussed their requirements with US government officials and defense industry executives.

Ukraine's Desired Armaments

According to documents seen by Reuters, Ukraine's wish list includes a range of weapons and equipment:

C-17 Globemaster Transport Jets

One of Ukraine's ambitious requests is the Boeing-made C-17 Globemaster transport jets. These jets are known for their versatility and can transport up to 102 troops. They are often used for tactical airlift, airdrop missions, and medical evacuations. The C-17 Globemaster has a length of 174 feet and a wingspan of nearly 170 feet.

C-130 Super Hercules

Ukraine is also interested in acquiring the C-130 Super Hercules, a four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft. Made by Lockheed Martin, it is designed for airlift missions and excels at airdropping troops and essential equipment into challenging environments. With a length of about 100 feet and a wingspan of approximately 130 feet, the C-130 Super Hercules is a highly capable aircraft.

Apache Attack Helicopters

Ukraine has expressed its desire to obtain Apache attack helicopters. Manufactured by Boeing, the AH-64 Apache is considered the world's most advanced and proven attack helicopter. It is known for its multi-role attack capabilities, precision strikes, air support to ground troops, and reconnaissance missions.

Black Hawk Helicopters

The Black Hawk helicopter, produced by Lockheed Martin's Sikorsky unit, is a versatile military helicopter widely used for various purposes. It is primarily used to transport troops and supplies, provide combat support, and conduct medical evacuations.

Drones

Ukraine's wish list includes three types of drones made by General Atomics. This includes the MQ-9B Sky Guardian, a patrol and reconnaissance drone capable of flying for up to 40 hours in all types of weather conditions. Drones have become increasingly crucial in modern warfare for surveillance and intelligence gathering.

Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD)

Ukraine has also requested the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, manufactured by Lockheed Martin. This powerful missile defense system is designed to intercept and shoot down ballistic missiles, providing a reliable defense against missile threats.

F-18 Hornet Fighter Jets

Ukraine is interested in acquiring F-18 Hornet fighter jets, which are versatile and multirole aircraft. Initially developed by McDonnell Douglas and later acquired by Boeing, these fighter jets are used for various missions, including air superiority, ground attack, and reconnaissance. They are considered more advanced and expensive than F-16s.

F-16s

Unsurprisingly, Ukraine's wish list also includes F-16 jets, which have long been sought after. The US approved the transfer of F-16s from Denmark and the Netherlands in August. However, the transfer has yet to happen due to the need for pilot training.

ATACMS Missiles

Ukraine has already received high-profile MGM-140 Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) from the US earlier this year and is now seeking more. These missiles have proven effective in striking Russian helicopters and S-400 missile systems on the battlefield.

Abrams Tanks

Ukraine has requested additional Abrams tanks, which were first sent by the US in September. However, these tanks have been notably absent from the fighting. Analysts suggest that Ukraine may be waiting for the right moment, possibly in the spring when a new offensive could be launched.

155 Millimeter Artillery

Ukraine has also asked for more 155 millimeter artillery, which has been essential in their fight against Russian forces. However, concerns are growing about a potential shortage of artillery shells. The US and NATO allies have struggled to keep up with Ukraine's demands for artillery shells and ammunition, with Western stockpiles depleting rapidly.

Conclusion

Ukraine's wish list of US weapons highlights their determination to defend themselves against Russian aggression. While the US has not committed to providing all of the requested weapons, the Biden administration has expressed its commitment to providing the necessary military assistance. The fulfillment of Ukraine's wish list could significantly enhance their defense capabilities and strengthen their position in the ongoing conflict.
