Vladimir Putin Signs Law Allowing Seizure of Assets from Critics of Russia’s Ukraine War

Vladimir Putin Signs Law Allowing Seizure of Assets from Critics of Russia’s Ukraine War

February 15, 2024 By Peter Leave a Comment

New Law Targets Spread of "Fake News" about Russian Armed Forces

Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, has recently signed a law that enables the authorities to confiscate the assets of individuals who have been convicted of spreading false information about the Russian armed forces. This new legislation is part of a broader effort to crack down on critics of Russia's war in Ukraine.

Cracking Down on Critics

The law signed by Putin allows for the seizure of money, assets, and property belonging to those who are found guilty of "disseminating fake news about Russia's armed forces" and engaging in activities that are deemed detrimental to national security. The primary objective of this law is to target individuals who have gained assets through criminal means or have used their resources to undermine Russia's national security.

According to Vyacheslav Volodin, the speaker of Russia's lower house, the intention behind this law is to punish "traitors who sling mud at our country and our troops." In addition to confiscating assets and money, the law also allows for the revocation of honorary titles held by these individuals.

Expanding the Crackdown

This new law builds upon previous legislation passed in March 2022, which imposes jail terms and fines on individuals who spread "fake news" against the Russian military. Since the war in Ukraine began, several people in Russia have already been imprisoned for criticizing the conflict. The Kremlin is also targeting individuals who have fled the country, leaving behind assets that are now subject to seizure.

The Context and Implications

Russia's new law comes as the war in Ukraine enters its third year and just a month before Putin seeks re-election for a fifth presidential term in March. At 71 years old, Putin is widely expected to secure victory in the upcoming election, facing three opponents.

The introduction of these laws reflects the Russian government's determination to silence opposition and control the narrative surrounding the war in Ukraine. Critics argue that these measures violate freedom of speech and target individuals who dare to voice dissenting opinions.

As the conflict in Ukraine continues, it remains to be seen how these laws will be enforced and what impact they will have on the freedom of expression within Russia.
