- Elon Musk stated that a paid ad-free Twitter model will soon be made available.
- In a tweet, the billionaire stated Saturday that advertisements are "too common" and "too large."
- The subscription would be added to Twitter Blue, the other paid model.
Elon Musk hopes to offer Twitter users an alternative to advertisements that he calls "too common" and "too large" but at a price.
In a tweet, the billionaire owner of Twitter said that the company would launch a subscription with zero ads in the next few weeks.
A paid subscription would allow users to join Twitter Blue. This model allows them to pay a fee for a verified blue checkmark and access to features such as an edit button. Twitter Blue costs $8 per month for desktop access and $11 for mobile iOS or Android access. It was not immediately known what the cost of the ad-free tier would be.
Musk is still in trouble with advertisers after his takeover in Oct 2022. Many are concerned about Musk's unpredictable behavior and disregard for content moderation. Some even pull their ads entirely.
Many brands, including General Motors and Volkswagen, announced that they would suspend advertising on Twitter in November. Musk tried to calm their fears in meetings but there is still hesitancy. According to The Information the spending on social platforms has been cut by up to 50% by Group M, an ad-buying firm.
The Financial Times reports that Musk will have to pay the first interest payment of the $13 billion loan to finance the purchase of Twitter. This puts the company in a difficult financial situation.
