AI Experts Criticize Lack of Female Representation on NYT's AI List
The New York Times recently published a profile of the "who's who" in AI, which has come under fire for featuring only twelve men and excluding women. Among those listed are prominent figures such as Tesla CEO Elon Musk, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates.
The absence of women on the list has been met with criticism, with Fei-Fei Li, often referred to as the "Godmother of AI," speaking out against the lack of diversity. She emphasized that the issue goes beyond herself and called attention to the numerous women who have made significant contributions to the field.
NYT's Profile Ignites Controversy Over Gender Disparity in AI
The New York Times' profile on the "who's who" in AI has faced backlash for its exclusion of women. The article credits a list of twelve men, most of whom are leaders in AI companies and tech giants, for their role in advancing the modern AI movement.
Tech journalist Kara Swisher took to social media to express her disappointment, highlighting that there are many accomplished women in AI, including Fei-Fei Li. Li, a Stanford professor, reposted Swisher's criticism, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the contributions of all individuals in the AI field.
Fei-Fei Li, known for establishing ImageNet in 2009, a large dataset used for training AI, has been hailed as a pioneer in the field and is often referred to as the "godmother of AI."
Critics Question Selection Criteria and Suggest Female Candidates
The selection criteria used by the NYT to compile the AI list has also faced scrutiny. Sasha Luccioni, a researcher at the AI community Hugging Face, criticized the inclusion of individuals such as an "internet philosopher and self-taught A.I. researcher" while excluding women who have made significant contributions to the field, such as Fei-Fei Li, Doina Precup, and Joelle Pineau.
Roxana Daneshjou, a Stanford professor, echoed the sentiment, providing a list of accomplished women in AI who could have been included. She emphasized that influential individuals should not overshadow those who have made substantial contributions to the field.
Other notable figures who have criticized the list include tech investor Vinod Khosla and Toby Walsh, the chief scientist of the University of New South Wales' AI Institute.
