- Tesla recalls 35 Semis due to potential rollaway risks related to an emergency brake failure.
- In December, the electric carmaker began to deliver the trucks.
- It is not clear how many Tesla Semis were delivered.
Tesla issued a recall on its semi-truck electric for a rollaway problem just months after it was released.
This recall affects 35 trucks but it is not clear what percentage of all Tesla Semis are affected.
In December, the electric-car manufacturer began to deliver semi trucks. CNBC reported in February that PepsiCo had received 36 of 100 electric trucks it ordered. It also claimed that it was the first to receive 100 Tesla Semis that it pre-ordered. Tesla released an end-of quarter delivery report in January but did not provide the Tesla Semi's delivery number.
According to the report, trucks manufactured between November 30, 2022 and Feb 28, 2023 are affected by the recall by National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration. According to the NHTSA, the air leak could cause the parking brake to fail to engage on the 82,000-pound vehicle. This would pose a risk to the vehicle's safety. Teslarati, which covers Tesla news, reported the recall first.
According to the NHTSA report, "If the parking brakes fail to engage when the driver expects them, and the driver releases service brakes, the vehicle could unintentionally move, increasing risk of crashing,"
The maker of electric cars began to investigate the issue in February. On March 17, they filed a voluntary recall. According to the NHTSA report, there have been no reports of any injuries or crashes as a result of this issue as of March 24. According to the report, Tesla stated that it will replace the parking brake module at no cost to owners.
The Tesla Semi recall is just one of many problems the electric-car manufacturer has had to deal with in recent months. The NHTSA announced earlier this week that it was looking into reports of Model X 2022 or 2023 seatbelt failures. NHTSA is also investigating reports that the Model Y's steering wheel fell off while it was being driven. Tesla also issued an over-the air recall of more than 362,000 cars in February due to concerns that its Full Self-Driving software could cause cars to behave unsafely around intersections.
Insider reached out to Tesla for clarification but was not able to reach them.
