Polish Security and Defence under the new Tusk Government: A ‘go to’ Player once more?

Polish Security and Defence under the new Tusk Government: A ‘go to’ Player once more?

December 19, 2023 By Peter Leave a Comment

Introduction

On 13 December 2023, the new Polish coalition government, known as the ‘Coalition of October 15’, took office. Led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, the government has similarities to the previous Civic Platform government, particularly in foreign policy. Poland has been described as a ‘go to’ player in European defense, with a determination to achieve front-rank status.

Security First

The new government will continue to view Russia as a direct military threat. It will prioritize strengthening Poland’s relations with NATO and focus on regional security and territorial defense. The government also aims to modernize the Polish armed forces.

Poland and EU Security and Defence: Leading the Way?

Under the new government, Poland will have a more pro-EU focus. However, given the current security environment, Poland is unlikely to participate extensively in EU defense operations. The government will seek to strengthen partnerships in both NATO and the EU.

Poland and Germany: Friends once more?

The new government is expected to have a positive stance towards Germany. However, Poland will avoid being seen as a junior partner and will strive for a balanced and mutually beneficial relationship.

Ukraine's New Ally in Warsaw: Boosting Kyiv’s Euroatlantic Aspirations?

Poland will be a strong supporter of Ukraine and its aspirations for EU accession and NATO membership. The new government is committed to helping Ukraine in its fight against Russia.

Conclusion: Continuity, Change and Return in Polish Security and Defence Policy

The new government represents continuity, change, and a return to key players in Polish politics. Poland will retake its position as a central player and leader within the EU and have warmer relations with Germany. However, the deteriorating regional security environment and domestic changes ensure that Polish security policy will not return to the pre-2015 era. The government will prioritize NATO over EU defense and continue to support Ukraine.
