- Insider reports that Elon Musk purchased 10,000 GPUs for Twitter to create an AI model.
- This came shortly after he had signed an open-letter calling for a 6-month break in the development of powerful AI.
- Bloomberg reported that a VC founder suspects Musk is just trying to catch up.
Vinod Khoosla, venture capitalist and tech entrepreneur at Bloomberg, said that Elon Musk could be using his calls to slow AI development as a way to catch up.
In March, the Twitter CEO was among over 1,000 people who signed an open letter warning that AI companies are "locked in a race out of control" and calling for a 6-month pause.
Musk backed the "Godfather of AI", Geoffrey Hinton earlier this week. Hinton quit Google and spoke to The New York Times of his regrets about creating a technology which could be a threat to humanity.
Khosla believes that Musk only speaks out to gain an advantage in the race.
Bloomberg reported that Elon was behind. "I 80% believe his decision to slow down AI was made so that he could catch-up."
Insider's Kali Hays revealed last month that Musk purchased roughly 10,000 graphics processor units (GPUs) for Twitter. GPUs are often used by tech companies to create large AI models.
Musk cofounded OpenAI in 2015, the company that is behind ChatGPT, which is widely considered to be the leader of the new AI boom. Musk left the company in 2018, after his cofounders including Sam Altman rejected his offer to run it, according to Semafor.
Musk was reportedly concerned that OpenAI would fall behind Google as it raced to develop new technologies, and he believed he could achieve artificial general intelligence at Tesla.
Musk called an OpenAI intern "a jackass", and later gave him a trophy as a souvenir of the disagreement, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Mus warned about AI's threat even before he took over Twitter.
He said that humans could be "house cats" to AI at a conference in 2016 and suggested an implant such as Neuralink would help combat this.
Twitter was contacted by Insider for a comment. Twitter responded to Insider's inquiry with an automated response.
