- Tucker Carlson announced Tuesday that his show would be available on Twitter.
- Last month, Fox News fired the host shortly after Dominion settled its defamation suit.
- Reports show that the median age of Twitter users, compared to Fox News viewers is significantly younger.
Tucker Carlson has officially moved to Twitter. But whether his loyal Fox fans — especially those older — will follow him remains to be seen.
The Media Matters for America watchdog group released leaked tapes from behind the scenes of Tucker Carlson Tonight, in which the 53-year old host made sexist remarks, praised misogynist Andrew Tate and called his audience "post-menopausal."
The comments, though crudely expressed, reflect the fact that Fox News attracts an older demographic. For a former Fox TV host who wants to build the same kind of loyal following on Twitter as he did at Fox, this may be a problem.
Carlson, who lost his job on April 24, announced that he would be bringing a 'new version' of his show to twitter. Carlson praised Twitter in a video to his seven-million followers, claiming it was a platform for "free speech."
Carlson's tweet has been liked by nearly half a millon people. Conservative politicians and influencers from Lauren Boebert and Kid Rock have praised the move.
Carlson, however, is entering a market that has a different age demographic than his previous audience. According to Nielsen ratings, at Fox News the average age of a viewer was 65.
Pew Research's study shows that Twitter users are 40 years old on average.
Twitter's political views are also different. Carlson's brand relies on talking points that are right-wing or white supremacist, but according to a study by the Pew Research Center, nearly 70% of Twitter users lean left, according a 2020 report.
Carlson may be able find an audience, even though Twitter is now in the hands Elon Musk who purchased the platform at the end of 2022.
Musk insisted that his politics were at the forefront and encouraged content creators from the "left" to create their own Twitter shows and follow Carlson's example. Musk has reinstated many conservative accounts that were previously banned, suspended left-wing accounts and promoted conspiracy theories and white-supremacist talking points. Experts have previously told Insider it is clear that Musk uses the platform to promote right-wing extremist views.
J.M. Berger, an expert on extremism in social media, such as Twitter, spoke to Insider about this issue in December. "Any argument that says he is trying to empower the middle is patently false and should be treated accordingly."
Insider's comment request was not immediately responded to by Carlson representatives.
