Elon Musk conducted a poll and 57.5% voted for him to step down as Twitter’s chief executive. Musk tweeted, “I will abide the results of this poll,” stating that 17 million people had voted for Musk to be Twitter’s CEO. Around 10 million said he should stay.
Twitter users voted for Elon Musk to step down as the site’s owner.
Musk posted a poll on the website on Sunday asking for users’ opinions on whether Musk should step down. The poll was viewed by just over 17.5 million people in its 12-hour run time. 57.5%, or approximately 10 million, voted for Musk to step down.
Musk tweeted Sunday afternoon, “Should you step down as head Twitter?” “I will adhere to the results of this survey.”
Musk responded to the poll by tweeting that “Be careful what you wish for, because you might get it” and “Those who want power, are the ones who least need it.”
Changpeng Zhao, Binance CEO, was one of those who urged Musk to remain at the site. He tweeted “Keep the course,” just minutes before closing the poll. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. told Musk to not resign.
YouTuber MrBeast said that he supported Musk’s resignation.
Musk took control of Twitter in October and has been polling his users about various issues, including the reinstatement of former President Donald Trump’s account and the return of Vine, a video-sharing app. Musk used the Latin phrase “vox populi vox dei” to justify his controversial actions.
However, Musk hasn’t been able to follow through on his poll results. Musk was mocked by critics using the phrase “vox populi” to make fun of him. He didn’t follow up on a poll where Twitter users voted for him.
Accounts such as @ElonJet which made publicly available information about Musk’s private plane, and Jack Sweeney’s personal account remain suspended from this site.
Musk’s actions as the CEO of the social media platform have caused division. Some people praise him for his pledge to encourage free speech and change Twitter’s content-moderation policies. Others have expressed concerns about a rise of hate speech on the site, and have also questioned Musk’s hypocrisy in suspending journalists.
Over concerns about content moderation, advertisers have been flooding the site. Musk seems to have introduced new policies at whim. Some of these policies he later reversed. His changes have also led to a massive shakeup in Twitter’s workforce. Thousands of employees have resigned, been fired or were laid off.
The stock of Tesla rose almost 5% in premarket trades shortly after the poll was closed. Musk is SpaceX’s CEO and Tesla’s chief executive officer. Some shareholders were concerned that Musk was abandoning Tesla as he focused on Twitter.
