Community Outrage
In a recent visit to Fort Chipewyan, a First Nation community in Northern Alberta, the Alberta Energy Regulator CEO faced scowling faces and angry outbursts from residents. They expressed frustration over the regulator's handling of a massive tailings leak from an Imperial Oil site.
Legal Action
Chief Allan Adam of Athabaska Chipewyan First Nation served a $500 million lawsuit to the AER CEO, accusing the regulator of negligence and failure to inform the community about the leaks. The lawsuit includes claims of breach of duty to consult and unjustified Treaty infringement.
Community Concerns
Residents, including Dene elder Alice Rigney, voiced their concerns about the environmental impact of industrial pollution from the oil sands on their traditional land. They criticized the AER for prioritizing industry over the well-being of the community.
