- Mark Cuban claims that Elon Musk's purchase of Twitter could give him an advantage in the AI arms races.
- The "Shark Tank' investor claimed that Musk could use it even to create a virtual Elon.
- Cuban warned that AI might make "dangerous" people "smart."
Mark Cuban believes Elon Musk's purchase of Twitter could help his AI venture to compete with OpenAI, other companies and others.
Musk announced earlier this year that he would launch a startup rival to OpenAI's ChatGPT – a new venture which he jokingly dubbed TruthGPT. Musk later incorporated X AI. Kali Hays, an Insider reporter, was the first person to report Musk's plans.
Cuban tweeted on Thursday that, in his opinion, the AI arms race revolves around the companies with the most data.
Musk is able to use the whole of Twitter to feed or train any open-source model, and be a rival to the Big 3. Cuban said that it would be "pretty awesome" but "pretty frightening."
Cuban wrote: "He can weigh both his tweets and the ones of sources he prefers, and end up with an AI consumer-facing that can be like a virtual Elon."
Cuban told Insider in an email that it would be "interesting" to see how Elon uses the money.
Insider reported that "anyone can create their own virtual version by downloading the open-source LLMs, and feeding in their personal data." "Twitter's tweets are unique in their differentiation." It's an amazing utility.
Cuban stated in an earlier Thursday post that he believed that large language models needed to "evolve".
He said that to get there they would need to have access to IP and data. The most important will not be for free. He is curious to see which of the big three AI companies – Meta, Google and Microsoft/OpenAI – will be the most willing to pay the most.
Cuban, like many other tech entrepreneurs, appears to be wary about AI. In a separate Twitter posting on the topic, Cuban wrote that the technology makes "dangerous people smart," and "there will be unintended effects."
Musk didn't respond to an Insider request for a comment before publication. Musk, who founded it and originally invested in OpenAI, has been vocal in recent months against the company.
The New York Times reports that Twitter also blocked OpenAI from accessing Twitter data in early this year, which the AI company had licensed to build ChatGPT.
