Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez said she is assessing her next steps following Twitter's Elon Musk's promotion of a parody Twitter account impersonating Alexandria.
Musk replied with a flame emoji to a Monday tweet from @AOCpress' verified parody account. Musk said, "This may be the wine, but I have a crush on Elon Musk".
The New York Democrat accused Musk of boosting @AOCpress' visibility on Tuesday and warned her 13,4 million followers to "be careful what you see." Her real account is called @AOC.
She tweeted: "FYI, there's an account here that is impersonating me. It has gone viral." "The CEO of Twitter has engaged it and boosted visibility. It's spreading false policy statements. My team and I are assessing how we can move forward. "Be careful what you see in the interim."
The parody of the Alexandria Ocasio Cortez Press Release @AOCpress, May 29, 2023
Ocasio Cortez seems to be referring Musk, even though Linda Yaccarino was named CEO of Twitter earlier this month.
The parody account replied by copying and pasted the tweet, retweeting Ocasio Cortez, and writing "I can't imagine someone would do this to us." The parody account wrote "Parody shouldn't be legal," and "If Elonmusk wants a chance to work with me, then he will ban my parody account."
This is literally not funny.
When asked if Ocasio Cortez was considering leaving Twitter, a spokesperson for Ocasio Cortez didn't immediately respond.
@AOCpress, a parody account that is verified and growing in followers, has existed since 2018. It has a tweet that is pinned to the top of its page, saying, "Printing is the only solution to inflation."
Ocasio Cortez and Musk have been at odds over Musk's decision to charge subscribers $8 a month for Twitter Blue. This service now provides a verified checkmark, previously used by Twitter’s former management in order to prevent impersonation.
