- Tesla's Supercharger Network is now open to Ford and GM EV drivers in 2024.
- This alliance could force other automakers into partnering with Tesla.
- This is a win-win for both consumers and Tesla.
DETROIT (AP)… Starting next year, owners who own electric vehicles from General Motors or Ford will be able charge them at the charging stations of Tesla, which is the largest network of its kind in the United States.
Both Detroit-area automakers decided to adopt Tesla’s EV Charging Connector, the plug which connects an electric vehicle with a charging station.
GM and Ford may force the rest of auto industry to adopt Tesla's charging technology. It would be a huge victory for Tesla as it would guarantee a new revenue stream in the future.
Currently, there are two types of EV plugs: Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) and CCS. Both are used by almost all automakers. Ford and GM are not the only automakers that could join them.
Tesla Superchargers are changing. Here's how.
Tesla has the largest charging network in the United States, with 17,000 plugs. Tesla's stations charge faster than others. These stations are often safer and more reliable than others, as well as being located in closer proximity to major travel routes.
According to the new agreements, EVs manufactured by GM and Ford will be able to charge, beginning next year, at 12,000 Tesla Supercharger outlets. Tesla is the largest seller of EVs within the United States, followed by GM. Ford is No. 3.
Analysts say that because these three companies dominate the EV market so much, other automakers will likely sign up with Tesla in order to avoid being at a disadvantage.
"Do I really want my customers to be denied access to Superchargers and to pay $100,000 for their vehicle?" Gary Silberg is the global head of automotive at KPMG.

What you need to know about EVs
You will need an adapter if your EV was made by GM, Ford or a similar manufacturer. This allows you to connect the chargers from Tesla. Unknown is the cost of these adapters. You can continue to charge your network with CCS connectors.
Tesla chargers are not available to you if your car was made by another manufacturer. The Energy Department reports that there are a growing number of public charging stations with CCS connectors. There are now nearly 54,000 sites with 139,000 plugs. Only 7,400 of these stations are DC fast charging stations, which can charge a car in minutes.
Tesla Superchargers: How to find them
GM and Ford have announced that they will begin installing Tesla compatible ports in new EVs by 2025. You would need an adapter to use a CCS charging station instead.
Although other automakers are likely to switch over to Tesla's system, this adapter will probably be needed for a few more years.
Sam Abuelsamid is an analyst with Guidehouse Insights. He said, "I think that by 2027 there won't be any new EVs for North America, especially those with CCS ports."
Both consumers and Tesla will benefit.
GM and Ford did not provide many details about the financial arrangements. Tesla's revenue will increase as more Ford and GM cars charge.
GM has said that it will not spend any money on this deal. Instead, its customers will be paying Tesla to charge their cars. GM and Ford EV drivers will also benefit from the deal, as they'll have access to twice as many chargers.
Rivals who are threatening to charge may suffer a blow
Companies that have their own charging network, such as ChargePoint or EVgo, could feel squeezed if other automakers follow Tesla.
The companies would need to ensure that their fast chargers are compatible with the Tesla plug or they could become more competitive, by adding more stations and improving reliability.
Abuelsamid stated that "up to this point they didn't really have to compete against Tesla for the owners of CCS equipped vehicles."
Silberg stated that because Tesla's network is available to more vehicles than the others, other companies may struggle to attract investors. As they adapt, however, consumers will gain more charging options.
He said that the move would "light a fire" under these companies.
There's no certainty that other EV manufacturers will partner with Tesla
There are many different types of varying.
Kia, Nissan, and Toyota declined comment. Hyundai says it is still evaluating its technology but has no announcements.
Stellantis has said that it is working on a solution. Volkswagen has said it is committed to the CCS Standard.
Electrify America plans to double the number of charging stations by 2026. The organization was founded with money received from a VW settlement for cheating on emissions. It has about 4,000 plugs and 840 charging stations.
