- Elon Musk says he's making dark mode Twitter's default option.
- He said that he would scrap the light mode, because it was "better on every level."
- Later, the billionaire retracted his decision after users asked him to retain the option of light mode.
Elon Musk hasn't completed his Twitter makeover yet.
The billionaire announced that Twitter would be rebranded to X, and changed the logo of the company immediately. He said he planned to make the "dark" mode the default setting on the platform.
Tesla's boss originally announced that light mode would be scrapped altogether because the dark mode was "better" in all aspects. However, he later backtracked and said dark mode will simply become the default.
He tweeted Thursday evening, "A lot people asked us to keep the light mode so we will. But default will be dark, and dim will be removed."
People argued for Twitter's "light mode" in the comments section of the original tweets.
One user commented, "Dark mode makes it much more difficult to read in daylight." "Change default, not option."
Musk launched an ambitious Twitter rebranding in the past week.
Some commentators and experts have been confused by the sudden and dramatic rebrand. Bloomberg reported that the loss of Twitter's brand could wipe out between $4 billion to $20 billion worth in value. This was based on analysts and branding agencies.
A marketing expert told Fortune that the rebranding "was completely irrational, both from a brand and business point of view."
Musk has spoken for years about his desire to integrate Twitter into a "everything-app" called X. Originally, he said that the platform would "accelerate" the app's growth.
