Twitter is abuzz with reports of another Tesla Semi being damaged on the side of a road.
Many of the Tesla Class 8 electric trucks have been seen abandoned on the side roads since the company started to deliver them last month. A PepsiCo Tesla was seen being towed by another truck.
These sightings have raised questions about the reliability of Tesla’s new semi-autonomous electric vehicle. It was produced at Tesla's Nevada manufacturing plant in October, after many years of delays. The truck was originally scheduled to begin production in 2019.
Another Tesla Semi, which appears to be in a coma, was trending on Twitter Thursday. This video was originally shared by TikTok and appears to have been taken earlier in the month in Modesto (California).
This is not a good sign for investors who are already concerned about the severe economic headwinds Tesla faces in 2018. However, Dan Ives, analyst at Wedbush, stated that alarm bells aren’t going off yet.
Ives stated, "These aren't the images and sights that you want to see." There are no red flags. It will be interesting to see how they deal with it. It is important to control quality.
Tesla is well-known for resolving any issues that arise after vehicles are delivered to customers via over-the air updates. However, the company has not had the best results with this strategy and is now under federal investigation for self-driving software updates.
In 2017, Tesla introduced the Class 8 prototype, initially with a December 2019 production date. Former Daimler executive Jerome Guillen led the program, which was discontinued in 2021. Tesla delayed the start of Semi production due to Guillen's departure, as well as a number of supply chain problems.
Major companies have placed orders for the electric vehicle despite delays. Anheuser-Busch and Walmart are among the top pre-ordered names for the Tesla Semi. UPS and PepsiCo were the first to receive deliveries in December.
