Elon Musk has made it a practice to make organizations pay $1,000 per month for a verified blue checkmark on Twitter accounts. Some companies are furious.
Twitter announced that it will remove legacy verified blue ticks (from users' accounts) starting April 1, which is April Fools' Day. Users can only keep their checkmarks by signing up for the paid Twitter Blue subscription, which costs $8 per month.
However, accounts that are signed up for Twitter Verified Organizations will pay a much higher price. Businesses, non-profits and government institutions can get a checkmark in blue, gold or grey for $1,000 per month. They will be charged an additional $50 per month plus applicable taxes for additional US-based business accounts.
William LeGate, founder of Pillow-Fight, said that the $1,000-per-month fee was "outlandish and meaningless." Because the blue checkmark did not provide a significant boost in engagement, he said that the bedding company would not be missed being verified.
"Blue checks will be replaced by trolls and imposters beginning April 1st." He said that people will associate blue checkmarks as being associated with scammers and vile trollings, and Musk sycophants.
BitMEX, a cryptocurrency platform said that verification is your cost to pay, not your users. BitMEX said that verification costs for all its users were expensive but that the company was happy to pay for it. Insider reached out to the platform for comment but they didn't respond.
Music Business Worldwide stated in a newsletter that it had "begrudgingly signed up" for Twitter's verified monthly subscription. It was not clear for what site the subscription was. Insider reached out to MBW for comment but they didn't respond immediately.
G Fuel, an energy drink manufacturer, has tweeted that they had a "good run"
Insider reached out to Twitter for comment. The company replied with an automated message, but didn't address the question.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez was one of the many Twitter users who criticized the change. She tweeted: "Last year they tried this somebody pretended to be Eli Lilly, and tanked stock prices by pretending that insulin was free."
