- The Kia EV6 & Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric cars are among the most popular, challenging Tesla.
- I can see the reason after driving both, and Tesla's Model Y.
- The electric cars of Hyundai and Kia offer a lot of range and style in an affordable package.
Tesla is the US's leader in electric-vehicle purchases. However, Elon Musk is losing ground in the US market for electric-vehicle sales.
It's easy to see why Americans are embracing new competitors in the Tesla race, the Hyundai Ioniq 5, and the Kia EV6. Trendy Korean SUVs are fun, stylish, and technologically advanced. They are challenging Tesla's Model Y.
They are just plain cool
[TAG1][TAG9]
Tesla was a formidable competitor to dorky hatchbacks for many years. The EV6 and Ioniq 5 have a bold, head-turning design. As I drove both cars around New York City, many people stopped to stare at me or ask questions.
[TAG2][TAG10]
The EV6's sleeker design is a better choice for those who don't like the Ioniq 5’s stubby proportions or cyberpunk aesthetic. Although the Model Y is beautiful, it has been so successful that it isn't a standout among EVs.
High-tech features with fun features
[TAG3][TAG11]
Both SUVs excel in the most important area: range. The higher-priced, larger-battery versions of the SUVs are capable of driving for 300 miles. That's a lot to be proud of. They can also charge extremely quickly. When plugged in to a high-powered charging station, they claim that they can recover 70% of their battery levels within 18 minutes.
One of the most interesting features is onboard electric power. This can be used to charge your laptop, or even make a meal while you are on the move, like I did. Particularly the Ioniq 5 makes excellent use of space. The Ioniq 5 feels spacious inside, thanks to its flat floor and large open space in front for a bag or purse.

Electric cooling in a regular vehicle
A Tesla's large touchscreen packs an impressive array of unique capabilities, including games, surveillance systems, and web browsers. It is almost like a smartphone on wheels. The large screen and the button-free interior are huge selling points. However, some people might prefer a more traditional user experience. This is what the Kia, Hyundai and other models offer.
[TAG5][TAG13]
They are high-tech, feel modern and work just like the cars we know. Although they do have a touchscreen, they are smaller and don't provide the same control as a Tesla's command centre.
To adjust the wipers or pop the trunk or dial up the air conditioning in a Tesla, tap the screen or shout the command. The controls for climate, radio and other functions are fairly standard in the Kia and Hyundai.
[TAG6][TAG14]
They also drive well
The Model Y is fast and handles like a sports car. However, the Model Y can be a rollercoaster ride. The suspension on the Y can feel stiff and strained over bumps.
[TAG7][TAG15]
However, the Hyundai glides smoothly down the road. Although the EV6 has a sportier steering feel and is more geared towards driving fun, it doesn't feel quite as hardcore like the Model Y. Both models can be slapped with their all-wheel, dual-motor drive configurations.
The Model Y also has many pros. It's still a popular choice for those who want to stay on the cutting edge of technology. It is not going anywhere soon.
