Elon Musk said journalists are “not unique” and “Twitter citizens.” He spoke briefly in a Twitter Spaces chat and said that users would be suspended if they did doxes. This comes after Twitter suspended accounts of journalists who reported on Musk.
Elon Musk said Thursday that journalists will not be treated differently on Twitter.
This comes after Twitter banned several accounts of prominent journalists who had reported on him, including CNN, The Washington Post, The New York Times and The Washington Post.
Musk spoke briefly during a Twitter Spaces chat hosted by Katie Notopoulos, a BuzzFeed News tech reporter. The Space was also attended by other journalists, including those recently suspended from Twitter.
Musk stated that it was inappropriate to show real-time information about someone’s location in Space. This is according to an online recording.
Musk stated that there will be no distinction between journalists and the general public in the future. Musk stated that everyone will be treated equally.
The billionaire stated that “they’re not special because they’re journalists,” and added that they were “just a Twitter citizen.”
He said, in the clip, “You dox, and you get suspended. End of story.”
Musk stated in Space that if you post a link to any current information, it is the same as providing the actual information.
Musk abruptly left Space after two and a quarter minutes.
Twitter did not immediately respond to Insider’s request.
He made these comments after Twitter suspended Jack Sweney’s account, a 20-year old student who created a tool to tweet updates about Musk’s private plane. Twitter has updated its rules to prohibit users from sharing a person’s “live place”
CNN described the suspension of accounts of CNN journalists as “concerning but not surprising”. The Post stated in a statement that Drew Harwell, CNN’s reporter, was suspended because it undermined Musk’s plans to ensure Twitter was a platform for free expression.
