  • The much-anticipated "Barbie" film by Greta Gerwig is not a hit with everyone.
  • Some critics have taken issue with the portrayal of anti-patriarchal and feminism themes.
  • Elon Musk seemed to be joining in on the criticism of Gerwig's "Barbie", in a recent tweet.

"Barbie" is the new box-office sensation, but it's not for everyone.

Some critics, mainly conservative figures, have called the movie "woke" or "anti-man." Commentators like Ben Shapiro have been particularly critical of the film, citing its portrayal of modern femininity and themes of masculine fragility.

Elon Musk, the Tesla CEO, also seems to have embraced some of this backlash. Musk responded to a meme on Twitter by saying, "If you take a drink every time Barbie uses the word "patriarchy", then you'll pass out before the film ends."

Matt Gaetz, a Republican Florida congressman and his wife Ginger called on people to boycott this film.

Ginger Gaetz stated on Twitter that "the movie neglects to address any notions of faith or family and attempts to normalize an idea that men and woman can't work together positively (yuck)".

Insider did not receive a response from Musk's representatives that answered the question.

Musk has allied himself with conservative figures in the recent past.

The billionaire is known for sharing anti-trans content, and has been vocal about decisions that he deems "woke." He told Twitter users last month that "cisgender", "cis" and other terms were "slurs."

Musk, who acquired Twitter in October, has declared himself to be a "free speech absolutist". He has restored several banned accounts on Twitter. On the list of restored accounts is self-proclaimed misogynist Andrew Tate, who claimed to have received money through Musk's content-creation program.
