Larry Page Accuses Elon Musk of Favoring Humans Over Digital Life Forms
During an argument about the dangers of artificial intelligence (AI) at Elon Musk's 44th birthday party, Larry Page accused Musk of favoring humans over future digital life forms. The heated exchange between the Tesla CEO and the Google co-founder reportedly ended their friendship.
The Argument at Musk's Birthday Celebration
The disagreement between Page and Musk took place at Musk's 44th birthday celebration in 2015. As party attendees listened, the conversation turned to AI and became increasingly intense. Page expressed his vision of a "digital utopia" where humans would merge with intelligent machines, leading to a competition between different forms of intelligence. In contrast, Musk argued that machines would ultimately destroy humanity.
Musk's Response: "I Fucking Like Humanity, Dude"
According to Musk's biographer, Walter Isaacson, the clash between Page and Musk occurred in 2013. In response to Page's accusation, Musk passionately defended his position, stating, "Well, yes, I am pro-human, I fucking like humanity, dude." This exchange highlighted their conflicting views on the role and potential dangers of AI.
Clashes Over AI Beyond Musk's Birthday Party
The argument at Musk's birthday party was not the only instance of disagreement between Page and Musk regarding AI. When Google acquired the AI lab DeepMind for over $500 million in 2014, Musk approached DeepMind's founder, Demis Hassabis, urging him not to accept the deal. Musk expressed concerns about allowing Larry Page to have control over the future of AI.
Musk's concerns about the impact of AI led him to co-launch OpenAI, a nonprofit research lab dedicated to ensuring that AI systems benefit humanity. However, Musk later left OpenAI's board in 2018 after an unsuccessful attempt to take over the organization. He subsequently started his own AI startup called xAI, with the goal of understanding the true nature of the universe.
OpenAI's board has also faced internal disagreements regarding the dangers of AI, resulting in the temporary ousting of co-founder Sam Altman.
The clash between Larry Page and Elon Musk at Musk's birthday party highlighted their contrasting perspectives on AI and its potential impact on humanity. Their disagreement ultimately strained their friendship and further intensified the ongoing debate surrounding the future of AI.
