Elon Musk stated that Twitter would pursue legal action against an employee of the platform who he claimed was responsible for a Platformer report that suggested Musk's tweets were artificially boosted.
Platformer reported Wednesday that Musk asked 80 engineers on Twitter to help him promote his tweets following President Joe Biden’s tweet about Super Bowl received more attention than his.
Musk was questioned by a Twitter user on Friday if the Platformer report was true.
Musk responded: "The source" of the fake Platformer article was a disgruntled employee, who had been on paid leave for months and had accepted a job with Google. He felt the need to poison the well. Twitter will take legal action against him.
He didn't name the employee against which Twitter was taking legal action.
Platformer journalist Casey Newton told Insider that Elon's tweet was completely false. We stand behind our reporting."
In December, Musk sent a tweet to Twitter employees in which he threatened to sue employees for leaking confidential information to the media. He also instructed them to sign a pledge that they understood, Platformer Zoe Schiffer tweeted. Insider was informed by a person familiar with the matter that Musk sent the email.
Friday's CEO tweet stated that several major media outlets had incorrectly reported that his tweets were being boosted beyond normal levels. He stated that a review of his tweets from the past six months revealed the false reports.
Musk, who has 129,000,000 Twitter followers, tweeted, "We did have an issue that briefly caused replies not to be as prominent as primary tweets. But that is now fixed."
Twitter did not immediately respond to a request to comment.
Platformer reported that Musk's tweet regarding the Super Bowl received more than 9,000,000 impressions while Biden's tweet on the game got almost 29 million. The publication reported that Musk pointed out that there was an issue in engagement across the platform. Musk demanded engineers fix the problem and his deputies stated that they would lose their jobs if they did not, the publication added.
Another Platformer article published February 9 reported that Musk had fired a Twitter engineer after he said he was losing popularity on the site.
Musk has fired some employees who criticised him since he took control of Twitter in October and laid off thousands more.
