- Platformer reported that Musk asked engineers for ways to promote his tweets following the Super Bowl.
- Musk requested the change after President Joe Biden received more attention for a tweet about the Eagles.
- To create a system that would increase his tweets, engineers worked under threat of being fired.
According to Platformer, Elon Musk, Twitter CEO, didn't like the fact that his Super Bowl tweet was receiving fewer views than President Joe Biden's. He had Twitter engineers working tirelessly after the game to fix it.
Biden tweeted a video of First Lady Jill Biden showing support for the Eagles during the game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs. Musk also tweeted support for the Eagles but he deleted his tweet after four hours.
Platformer's Zoe Schiffer reported that Biden's tweet received nearly 29 million views, while Musk's tweet attracted over 9 million impressions.
Musk asked 80 engineers to start working on a project to ensure that his tweets get significant engagement. If they didn't, they would be fired. Platformer reported that Musk flew to the Bay Area, where Twitter's San Francisco headquarters is, in his private jet after the game to meet with his team.
Musk's cousin James Musk requested that all engineers respond to his Monday morning Slack message. He described the issue as "high urgency" according to the Platformer report.
Platformer reported that Twitter engineers worked all night to develop a system that would allow Musk to get more promotion for his tweets than other users. According to the outlet, engineers created a new code that "greenlights" all Musk's tweets automatically. This allows them to bypass Twitter filters that prevent one account from flooding the entire feed.
Platformer reported that engineers also discussed reasons Musk's tweets might not be performing as well. They suggested that several people may have blocked or muted Musk's content. However, they also discovered technical reasons that caused Musk to tweet less while fixing the issue.
Musk's boost is due to his public obsessiveness over his engagement on the app. Last week, Platformer reported that the CEO fired one his top engineers after the employee suggested Musk's declining engagement was due in part to declining public interest.
Musk posted a meme about his tweets on Tuesday, in which he seemed to acknowledge his increased visibility on the site. Later, Musk stated that the company would make further changes to the algorithm.
