- Elon Musk tweeted Wednesday, "Tesla Vision AI could really crush those Google 'not bot' tests lol."
- He was referring specifically to reCAPTCHA, which requires you to identify objects in order to prove that you are a human.
- However, Tesla announced that it was recalling almost 363,000 cars due to self-driving issues hours later.
Elon Musk claimed that the Tesla's artificial intelligence could pass Google's reCAPTCHA test – which are designed for humans to distinguish robots from human beings – hours before reports that almost 363,000 Teslas might be recalled due to potential problems with its self-driving tech.
Musk tweeted Wednesday evening, "Tesla Vision AI could really crush those Google 'not bot' tests lol."
The second-richest person in the world was responding to a Dogecoin fan joke that featured a variety of Tesla vehicles in an edited reCAPTCHA, captioned: "Cybertruck? Or a truck?
Although the long-awaited Cybertruck was revealed for the first time in 2019, production was delayed until early 2023, two years later than Musk predicted.

Google's reCAPTCHA system is used to protect users from spam. CAPTCHA, which stands for "Completely Automaticed Public Turing Test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart", was originally used to identify distorted text. Google's version is as easy as clicking a button or identifying objects.
Musk stated that a Tesla could not be separated from a human through this because he believes it can identify any object without any problem.
Within 24 hours of this tweet, it was widely reported by the media that Tesla was recalling almost 363,000 cars due to problems with its self driving technology.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, issues with the tech could cause the vehicle to behave unsafely around intersections. This includes driving straight through an intersection in a turn-only lanes, entering an intersection controlled by stop signs without coming to a complete halt, or proceeding into intersections during a steady yellow traffic signal.
Musk stated that recalling is happening over-the-air through a software update.
It is well-known that Tesla's AI autopilot feature has failed to recognize objects while driving. Examples include Tesla's AI autopilot mistaking the sun for the moon and red and yellow traffic lights.
One campaign group paid for the Super Bowl commercial showing Tesla's self-driving mode in full malfunctioning. The Dawn Project called it "unsafe software", as the footage showed Tesla driving in front of oncoming traffic, on the wrong side and over children-sized mannequins.
Musk responded with the following tweet: "This will greatly raise public awareness that Tesla can drive itself (supervised for now).
CNN reported last December that Tesla's self driving mode caused an eight-car pileup at California's Los Angeles International Auto Show, injuring nine.
Insider reached out to Google and Tesla for comment but they did not respond.
