Musk stated that he believes Twitter is still "somewhat of a start up in reverse" and said: "There's work needed here to get Twitter into a sort of stable position and to really develop the engine of software engineering," according to the Associated Press.

Musk bought Twitter in October for $44 billion. Musk then began a firing spree at Twitter, dismissing many executives, including Parag Agrawal, the former CEO. Musk demanded that employees commit to a "extremely difficult" work schedule or be fired.

Musk started a Twitter survey asking people whether they wanted him to "resign as CEO of Twitter" on December 18. The poll results didn't favor Musk. Some 57.5% of 17.5 million respondents voted against Musk's resignation as Twitter CEO.

Musk tweeted December 20th that he would resign as CEO when he found "someone foolish enough" to fill the position.

CNBC also heard from sources that Musk was actively seeking a new CEO in December.

Insider reached Musk but did not receive a response immediately.
