- Elon Musk claims that Twitter relies on Wikipedia to determine which news outlets are to be called "government-funded media".
- NPR was recently labelled "state-affiliated media" by Musk, a move Musk later admitted might have been incorrect. It then changed it to "government funded media".
- NPR receives less than 1% directly from the federal governments.
Twitter uses Wikipedia to inform its decisions about which news organizations accounts are "government-funded media."
Bobby Allyn, NPR reporter, was told the same by Elon Musk. Twitter's Help Center page on government and state-affiliated media labels also confirmed this policy.
"Government-funded media" refers to outlets that receive funding from the government. They may also include government involvement in editorial content. The Twitter page states that we may use other sources similar to this one to determine when this label will be applied.
Twitter recently added a label "state-affiliated media” to NPR's Twitter feed. This label is normally reserved for Russia Today, which is funded in part by the Russian government, as well as China's Xinhua News Agency (the official state news agency of China).
Musk later admitted that NPR might have made a mistake by adding the label "state-affiliated media".
Musk said that the operating principle of new Twitter is fair and equal treatment. However, it seems like this might not be true here.
Twitter has changed the NPR account's label to read "government-funded media"
According to NPR's website, less than 1 percent of the annual operating budget comes annually from federal departments and agencies, and grants from Corporation for Public Broadcasting. This corporation was established by Congress's Public Broadcasting Act of67.
Musk responded to being told by Allyn that NPR doesn't have any influence over its editorial decisions.
NPR did not respond immediately to a request for comments. Twitter responded to a request for comment with an automated message, which did not address the question.
John Lansing, NPR President, CEO, stated that Twitter's initial "state affiliated media" label was placed on Twitter's account. He also said that millions of listeners depend on NPR for fact-based, independent journalism. NPR is committed to freedom of speech, and holds the powerful accountable. Twitter cannot label us in this manner. Our democracy's health is dependent on a vibrant, free press.
Isabel Lara, spokesperson for NPR, stated that the organization would not resume tweeting until it has removed its label. Any tweets made in the interim would be subject to a "false disclosure."
