The current AI arms race can be attributed to a disagreement between Elon and Larry Page.
Musk said in the first part of a two-part, Monday-aired interview with Tucker Carlson that OpenAI was created because Page and he were close friends. I would often stay over at Page's house in Palo Alto and talk late into night to him about AI safety. "At least, my impression was that Larry wasn't taking AI safety serious enough."
Musk said: "He wants digital superintelligence as quickly as possible, or digital God, if you like.
Musk said that Google's AI approach has "great potential, but also potential for evil."
Musk disagreed with Page on how to best protect humans, and make sure we're not overtaken by superintelligent artificial intelligence. Musk claimed that Page called him a "specist," a term which means to value one life form over another. This could be humans or superintelligent artificial intelligence. "So, I was like 'Okay that's it. Yes, I'm a spesist, you got me'," adding that the jab, "was the final straw."
Musk stated that Google acquired DeepMind in 2014 and "roughly three quarters of the AI talent around the world" as well as a "huge amount of money, more computers, than anyone else."
He built a rival company because of his newly-personalized disagreement with Page.
Musk said to Carlson, "I thought the farthest thing away from Google would be a non profit that was fully open, because Google is closed and for-profit." "So, that's why 'open' refers to transparency and open source in OpenAI so people can know what's happening."
Musk founded OpenAI in 2015. He left the board of directors three years later, and is now a vocal critic.
In the interview, the Tesla CEO said that he plans to build an artificial intelligence (AI) he calls TruthGPT. He describes it as "a maximum truth seeking AI that attempts to understand the nature and origin of the universe."
Insider's comment request to Musk and Google was not immediately responded to by their representatives.
