- Meta's Threads app, designed to compete against Twitter, is now available on the App Store.
- Meta's Chief Product Officer said that users wanted a platform "run sanely".
- Elon Musk retaliated against Meta for its list of user data that Threads would collect.
Elon Musk reacted to a Meta executive’s jab at the company, as Threads, its Twitter competition app, is nearing release.
In a recent all-hands Meta meeting, the chief product officer seemed to be taking aim at Musk's unpredictable behavior.
The Verge reported that he had received a number of requests from public figures and creators who were interested in a platform run sanely. Meta staff cheered his words.
Threads can be pre-downloaded on the App Store. It's scheduled to launch officially on Thursday.
Musk responded to this news in an apparent sarcastic way, saying "Thank goodness Meta is so well run."
He was responding to a Tweet from entrepreneur Mario Nawfal, whose account Musk subscribes to. Nawfal disagreed with Musk's "sanely-run" insult and focused on Meta Data Collection Policy.
Threads collects a long list of user information in the App Store. This includes financial data, identifiers and "sensitive info."
This also attracted criticism by Twitter cofounder Jack Dorsey who tweeted: "All of your Threads belong to us."
Meta didn't immediately respond to Insiders request for a comment. Insider contacted Twitter to get a comment. Twitter responded to Insider's inquiry with an automated response.
Threads was released less than one week after Musk made his latest controversial change to Twitter, which limited the number of Tweets that users could view even if they paid the $8-a month fee for Twitter Blue.
Musk's announcement that unverified users will be limited to 600 tweets per day led many to try to sign up for other apps, such as Bluesky, which Dorsey supports and temporarily had to pause signups because of the surge in demand.
Insider's Kali Hays revealed that Musk and CEO Linda Yaccarino had left employees in complete darkness over the decision to limit the rates. This has caused engineers to scramble over the holiday of July 4 to fix "bad codes."
Meta's Threads project was confirmed for the first time in March by the technology newsletter Platformer. According to The Verge, it has been courting Oprah and even the Dalai Lama for them to sign up.
