- Friday's trial began with Elon Musk taking the stand over his 2018 tweets referring to wanting Tesla private.
- Jurors will be asked to decide whether Musk intentionally led investors astray by his tweets.
- Musk testified with typical defiance, stating that he doubted his tweets had any market significance.
Elon Musk briefly testified in court Friday in a lawsuit that could have cost him billions.
In a civil trial in San Francisco, the Tesla CEO testified about his August 2018 tweets. He claimed that he was planning to privatize his Tesla company with "funding secured."
Musk will continue his testimony Monday. Insider has learned that the shareholders who sued him plan to call several other prominent witnesses to the trial, including Deepak Ahuja (Tesla's former chief financial officer) and Martin Viecha (Tesla's head for investor relations), an attorney for the plaintiffs.
Musk is well-known for his past tendency to combative testimony — from making jokes to taking shots at opposing attorneys.
8 standout quotes from his half hour testimony:
- Musk is still not a fan British caver Vernon Unsworth who he once called "a pedo guy". "He wasn't a diver."
- He is unsure about big names asking him to stop tweeting: On whether Ron Baron, a billionaire investor, told him not to use Twitter after his tweets regarding the Thai cave explorer in July 2018, "He's certainly not saying don't use Twitter. He is saying that he shouldn't respond in the news to Twitter criticisms.
- He is skeptical that his tweets have an effect on Tesla's stock price: "Just simply because I tweet something doesn't mean people believe it, or will act accordingly."
- It's likely that you didn't want work for Tesla in 2017-2019: "The sheer amount of pain Tesla required in 2017-2019 was excruciating for both me and many others. I wasn't sleeping at the factory because it was my choice, but because I had no other choice.
- He made sure that the jury understood that short-sellers weren't traders with short stature. "Yes," he said. It is a seller with small stature. Are they like tall and medium sellers? It's probably important for… I'll just clarify."
- He doesn't like short-sellers. "I believe that short selling should become illegal. I believe it is a way for Wall Street criminals to take money from small investors. It is not good.
- He claims people understand how Twitter communicates: "Obviously there's a limit to the amount of characters you can use. Twitter users can be much more verbose when filing legal documents.
- He won't get to Inbox Zero. "I really like the Niagara Falls in email. It's very difficult to remember every email.
