  • Elon Musk’s signs will cost the San Francisco landlord who owns X’s headquarters fees.
  • Musk installed a large "X" logo on the HQ of the company formerly called Twitter.
  • The huge sign was taken down a few days later, all without a permit.

Elon Musk has caused more headaches to the owner of X's headquarters in San Francisco, California. X is the social media giant formerly known as Twitter.

San Francisco's Department of Building Inspection informed Insider that the owner of the 1355 Market Street building will be charged for not having the proper permits to erect and remove Musk's "X" sign from the top of the building.

The amount that the owner of the property will be charged for the sign is not yet known.

Insider's requests for comments on Tuesday were not responded to by X or Musk, nor the representatives of SRI Nine Market Square LLC – an affiliate of real estate investing firm Shorenstein – the landlord of the headquarters of the company.

Musk, the billionaire founder of X, the new name of his social media company, installed the "X" logo on the roof of its headquarters on Friday. This prompted a flurry of angry complaints from nearby residents.

Construction workers were seen Monday removing the sign, which locals had complained was "unstable", and that it had "a distressing strobing" light.

Insider was told by a spokesman from the Department of Building Inspection that the owner of the building would be charged for the installation of the illuminated structures without permission.

Patrick Hannan said that the fees would cover building permits, installation and removal of structures, as well as the investigation costs of the Department of Building Inspections and the Planning Department into the "X" sign which was not permitted.

Hannan told Insider the fees would be "based on the value of the work performed without a license, the cost for the investigation and the cost for the original license."

Hannan explained that the fees will be calculated at the time of submitting a permit request.

Hannan stated that a building permit is required for the removal of the "X" symbol, but "due safety concerns", the permit can be obtained later.

The city officials issued a violation notice on Friday, after a "X" sign had been placed on the roof of the building without a permit.

The Department of Building Inspection said that it received 24 complaints over the weekend about the sign. These included concerns about its structure safety and lighting.

It's not the only time that Musk, who bought Twitter for $44 Billion last year, had issues with the building's owner.

The landlord of the building sued Musk and his social media company in January for failing to pay rent of millions of dollars.

X has leased a total of 462,855 square feet at 1355 Market Street.
