Jack Sweeney was a teen who followed Elon Musk’s private plane. He said that he would continue to track it on “different platforms.” Sweeney said, “If I give in now, it’s kinda like letting the big man win.”
Jack Sweeney is a college student best known for his “Elonjet” private plane-tracking account on Twitter. He says he has no plans to stop monitoring Musk’s jet.
Sweeney stated in a Newsweek opinion piece published Thursday that he would like to continue tracking the plane using different social media platforms.
Sweeney wrote, “If I give in now, it’s kinda like letting the large guy win.”
Sweeney also stated in his op-ed, that he doesn’t care that Musk suspended “Elonjet” from Musk’s Twitter. He said that he already has a presence at Mastodon and Facebook, Truth Social, Instagram and Telegram.
Sweeney wrote, “I don’t have to follow Musk’s rules on other platforms and I don’t have to worry that he watching my account.”
Twitter updated its “Private Information Policy” on Wednesday. This now prohibits sharing someone else’s location in most cases. However, Musk’s new privacy policy banned over 30 Sweney accounts before Wednesday’s announcement. Accounts that track private planes such as those owned by Jeff Bezos or former President Donald Trump were also suspended.
He said that Twitter was his core platform because I had 500,000 followers. However, my accounts are growing on other platforms.”
Sweeney stated in his opinion piece that he was still a fan Musk’s ventures, despite having been banned from Twitter.
Musk threatened legal action against Sweeney on Wednesday, claiming that the publication real-time location data led to a “crazy follower” approaching a car carrying his son, X in Los Angeles.
Musk’s previous position has been reversed. Musk tweeted in November that his commitment to free speech extended to “not banning the account after my plane”, even though it is a direct safety risk to his personal safety.
Sweeney referred to Musk’s tweets in the opinion-ed, saying that “I don’t think my Elonjet accounts could have led an ‘crazy stalker’ to his car.”
He said, “I’m not tracking the car but his plane so I don’t see how they could be connected.”
Sweeney said that he felt “slightly intimidated” by Musk’s threat of legal action, but that there is no legal basis for a lawsuit.
Sweeney wrote, “I’m only posting information that’s already available,”
Insider reached Musk but did not receive a response immediately.
