Elon Musk’s Scathing Remark and the Scammy Ads on X

Elon Musk’s Scathing Remark and the Scammy Ads on X

December 1, 2023 By Peter Leave a Comment

An Unfortunate Ad Strategy

After Elon Musk's controversial outburst at The New York Times' DealBook summit, X seems to be facing a significant challenge with its ad strategy. Despite X's policy against the sale of counterfeit goods, many users are reporting seeing numerous ads for likely fake Louis Vuitton handbags on the platform.

Scammers Persist Despite Policies

X explicitly prohibits the sale and promotion of counterfeit goods on its platform, as stated in its counterfeit policy. However, scammers continue to peddle fake designer bags on X, raising concerns among users. Many have taken to social media to express their frustration and question why their feeds are flooded with scammy bag ads.

Although some of these ads have been taken down, it appears that X is engaged in a continuous battle to remove dozens more that keep popping up. Users have been reporting these ads since Wednesday, leaving them feeling inundated and exasperated.

The Impact on X's Trust and Safety

This situation does not bode well for X's perceived trust and safety on the platform. It also poses a challenge for Elon Musk to retain or regain the trust of big-name advertisers. In fact, Ebiquity, a company that works with 70 of the world's top 100 advertisers, revealed that only two of them advertised on X in September.

Given the current circumstances, it is unlikely that X's collaboration with Louis Vuitton, as hinted at by Taylor Fisher, head of fashion partnerships, will involve the promotion of counterfeit designer handbags. The luxury fashion house is probably displeased to see rip-offs of its products being advertised on X.

Concerns for Louis Vuitton and X's Response

Business Insider reached out to Louis Vuitton's parent company, LVMH, for comment on the situation, but there has been no immediate response. Similarly, X has not yet provided a comment outside of its normal working hours.

In conclusion, X's ad strategy has faced a setback due to the proliferation of scammy ads for likely fake Louis Vuitton handbags. The persistence of scammers and the potential impact on X's trust and safety highlight the need for prompt action and a more robust approach to maintaining the integrity of the platform.
