Jack Sweeney stated that he is not concerned about Elon Musk’s legal threat. However, a legal expert informed Insider that Musk does not have much of an argument but that a legal fight could prove costly.
Jack Sweeney is a college student who tracked Elon Musk’s private plane. He said that he doesn’t feel threatened by the legal threats.
Sweeney stated that he is not concerned about tweets being sent, as a tweet is a tweet. “From what I can see, there’s not much ground for him. That’s the opinion a lot [of people] that I’ve spoken to.”
Twitter suspended Sweney’s account that tracks Musk’s private plane @ElonJet on Wednesday. It was also suspended over 30 other accounts he has, including his personal profile.
Musk tweeted that “Last night, car carrying Lil X in LA was followed (thinking it was me), and then blocked car from moving & climbed onto the hood.” Musk had suspended @ElonJet on Wednesday night. He also brought it back temporarily and then suspended it again. “Legal action against Sweney and organizations that supported harm to my families is being taken.”
Twitter policies were also modified by the billionaire to ban accounts from sharing an “individual’s live location”. Sweeney stated that his @ElonJet account had been temporarily restored Wednesday night. He received an email stating that his account had been re-enabled. It also reminded him to refer to the updated policy regarding location sharing in order to prevent any further account restrictions. However, Sweeney’s account was again disabled within hours.
Musk posted a video on Wednesday night that showed a man following his son, aged two, in the car.
Sweeney said to Insider that he isn’t sure what the video means for him. He uses bots for public flight data, which he then posts via ADS-B Exchange.
He said, “The last time that I tweeted [from @ElonJet] it was 24 hours prior to that event and that car was [in the video] anyway.” “I track his plane but it doesn’t guarantee that he’s there.”
Musk and a Twitter spokesperson did not respond prior to publication.
According to the 20-year old, he was at home after college when Musk’s threat became known.
He said that he was “really surprised”, maybe for a few seconds, but then he thought rationally and added that his parents were also stunned by the tweet. It seems that he is trying to scare us and it won’t work.
Insider Musk was told by Erik Gordon, a professor of business law at the University of Michigan. He said that Musk does not have a strong legal case since he cannot claim evasion of privacy in relation to publicly available information.
However, Musk cannot sue – and a legal fight with one of the wealthiest people in the world could prove costly, Gordon stated.
Gordon stated that you could lose a lot of money in a lawsuit against the US judiciary system. These types of issues are often a matter of concern to wealthy people. It is an act of intimidation against those who cannot afford it.
Sweeney said that he was told by Insider to contact the Electronic Frontier Foundation or other digital rights groups. He has already spoken to people about the lawsuit but has yet to hire a lawyer.
